Chapter 59: Father-Daughter Meeting. [60]
Summary
Li Shi Min, the emperor, listened to Cheng Zhi Jie's analysis of the death of Jie Shi Lüe and He Luo Huo, who were killed by a young farm boy. Li Shi Min felt reactive as he had originally planned to capture and execute them publicly. The assassination might lead to a rebellion in Mo Nan and a war with a neighboring country. Li Shi Min and Cheng Zhi Jie discussed how to appease the hearts of the Mo Nan people. The Dong Yang Princess returned to the palace and met with Li Shi Min, who comforted her and praised her calmness during the kidnapping. However, the princess felt a surge of complex emotions and hinted at Li Shi Min's neglect of her mother. Li Shi Min changed the subject and discussed the spring planting and the princess's expenses. Li Shi Min brought up the topic of the young farmer, Li Su, who had saved the princess. The princess explained that Li Su was a talented poet and had developed a method of inoculation with cowpox that saved countless lives. Li Shi Min was surprised and praised Li Su's skills, but was disappointed when the princess told him that Li Su declined an official title. Li Shi Min decided not to grant any material rewards, feeling displeased that Li Su did not want to enter the imperial court. The Dong Yang Princess felt a pang of guilt for helping Li Su decline the Emperor's offer, knowing that Li Su's talents would eventually shine brightly. She wondered about Li Su's future, but decided to respect his decision and not worry about it.Full content
