Chapter 586: The Audit Office in Action [586]
Summary
Wen Yan Bo returns home exhausted after a meeting and instructs his son, Wen Ji Fu, to draft a letter despite the potential backlash from officials. Wen Ji Fu, worried about his father's standing, urges him to withdraw from the political scene, fearing manipulation by the ambitious Wang Ning An. Wen Yan Bo, however, believes enduring the current situation is necessary for future opportunities, citing historical examples of patience in politics. The next day, Wen Yan Bo submits three crucial documents: one endorsing candidates from Wang Ning An, another calling for severe punishments for two officials, and a third addressing rampant corruption in the court, proposing an Audit Department to restore public trust. This move earns him the emperor's favor, but he feels trapped by Wang Ning An's schemes. Zhang Jun, a respected official known for his integrity, resigns and plans to leave the capital. However, he is confronted by Zeng Bu from the new Audit Department, who accuses him of corruption. Despite Zhang Jun's protests and the support of angry citizens, he is arrested, highlighting the chaotic state of the court and the people's disillusionment.Full content
