Summary

Yang Yi walks with his daughter Xi Xi along a dusty village path where road construction is ongoing. They meet Mu Chang An, who informs them that Li Shu Po is gathering pigweed. Upon reaching Li Shu Po's house, Xi Xi is initially scared of the barking dog, Da Huang, but is reassured by Yang Yi. After some confusion about a puppy being given away, Li Shu Po presents a small female puppy to Xi Xi, who is overjoyed. Yang Yi learns that the puppy is old enough to be taken home, and they discuss its care. The chapter ends with Xi Xi excitedly realizing she can take the puppy home.
