Chapter 45: Yuwen Taibao. [48]

Summary

Feng Dou Shi, the largest market in Luo Yang during the Sui Dynasty, is filled with over 3,000 shops and bustling activity. A square outside the market has various small stalls selling inexpensive goods, thriving under a tolerant authority. Zhang Xuan enjoys the market's atmosphere and encounters a frail girl selling low-quality sheepskins and herbs. After learning of her father's death, he buys a sheepskin and leaves her a tael of gold. Later, Zhang Xuan witnesses a group of riders, the Yu Wen Tai Bao, causing chaos as they ride through the market. He recognizes them from a previous battle and learns about their new location at Feng Bei Tavern. Zhang Xuan pays for a private room at the tavern, eager to overhear the Yu Wen Tai Bao's conversation, particularly about Yu Wen Shu's health and military status.
