Summary

A Chinese man disguised as a Japanese soldier is stopped at a checkpoint. He pretends to be Lt. Ikeda from the Kwantung Army visiting a friend. The suspicious military police surround him when his motorcycle won't start. Earlier, he had violently escaped from a house after tying up and threatening a family, killing several soldiers, and setting traps. He fled north, avoiding coastal areas and contemplating visiting places associated with Lu Xun. The man reflects on Japan's oppressive policies towards farmers and its refusal to apologize for wartime atrocities. He maintains a facade of patriotic enthusiasm at the checkpoint, but his cover may be blown as tension mounts over the stalled motorcycle.
