Chapter 4: The Monk is Cunning. [7]

Summary

Tang Xiu Cai, a dedicated calligrapher, receives praise for his work from a shopkeeper and two monks, including Master Le Zhen, who offers him guidance. Despite his talent, Tang struggles financially and decides to set up a calligraphy stall at Tianfei Palace. His son, Tang Yi, is skeptical of Master Le Zhen's intentions, suspecting ulterior motives behind his generosity. Tang Xiu Cai, however, believes in the monk's kindness, even as he unwittingly agrees to copy Buddhist scriptures for him, potentially undervaluing his own work. The chapter explores themes of perception, trust, and the dynamics of generosity versus exploitation.
