Chapter 38: Officials Are Helpful. [37]

Summary

Shen Xi witnessed a court case involving his aunt Hui Niang and the Lu family over the ownership of her deceased husband's property. Initially, the Lu family seemed to have the upper hand, accusing Hui Niang of being involved in her nephew's death. However, the county magistrate Han Xie unexpectedly ruled in Hui Niang's favor, citing the "Great Ming Ordinance" which states that in the absence of heirs, biological daughters inherit property. Han Xie dismissed the Lu family's claims, ordering them to leave Ninghua County and threatening imprisonment if they disobeyed. The verdict left the onlookers unsatisfied, as the case seemed to abruptly end without much explanation or resolution.
