Summary

The chapter describes the challenges faced by the Song dynasty military during a great battle. Zhao Zhen, the ruler, is concerned about the weakness of the Song army compared to the Liao kingdom. His advisor Di Qing explains the issues with the military examination system and incompetent leadership. However, General Wang Ning An is able to achieve decisive victories against the Liao forces, lifting the siege of Ba Zhou and even penetrating into Liao territory.
