Chapter 36: Use and Trust. [39]

Summary

Gu Yi, the Deputy Minister of Justice, arrives in Henan with soldiers to take over the case of a bloodshed incident at Tian Si Ge restaurant. He demands case files and suspects from Li Gang, who reluctantly complies due to the authority of the document Gu Yi presents. However, they discover that the key suspect, Zhang Xuan, has been released on bail by Yan Wang Yang Tan. Gu Yi, frustrated, confronts the guards at the Yan Wang Mansion but realizes he has been misled. Meanwhile, Yang Tan discusses the implications of the situation with Zhang Xuan, who suggests that Yu Wen Shu is using the case to pressure Yang Tan into compromising for his own political gain. Yang Tan refuses to compromise, asserting his commitment to the Sui Dynasty's stability. Dou Qing observes the unfolding events and reflects on the power dynamics at play, noting Yang Tan's trust in Zhang Xuan, which contrasts with his own position.
