Chapter 36: Lawsuit. [35]

Summary

Hui Niang, a widowed pharmacist, was facing a legal battle over the inheritance left by her late husband. Her husband's family from Jiangxi accused her of concealing his death and demanded the return of their ancestral property. Hui Niang sought help from a wise old Daoist who guided Shen Xi, a young boy. A petition was mysteriously delivered, clearly explaining Hui Niang's determination to remain loyal to her husband and keep the inheritance for her biological daughter. However, during the trial, the county magistrate Han Xie appeared biased against Hui Niang, siding with the husband's family due to societal prejudices against women at the time. Despite her initial confidence, Hui Niang broke down in tears under pressure from the magistrate and public opinion.
