Summary

Tong Guan, anxious about the upcoming attack on Takan Zhai, forced Liu Fa to lead a night raid, knowing Liu Fa was the only general who had previously succeeded in conquering the stronghold. Takan Zhai's treacherous terrain was crucial for the Song army's logistics, and failure would jeopardize their campaign. Liu Fa and his five thousand soldiers stealthily approached Takan Zhai, relying on the element of surprise due to the lack of watchtowers. However, their plan was thwarted when they encountered an ambush, leading to a chaotic retreat attempt. Despite Liu Fa's experience, they were surrounded and outnumbered by the Xixia forces, who had set a trap. As Liu Fa and his men charged out of their hiding place, they were met with a deadly barrage of arrows, resulting in heavy casualties, including Liu Fa himself.
