Summary

Shen Jiao's dormitory has eight beds, one of which is empty. She enjoys her upper bunk by the window but feels out of place without her friends Da Bao and Xiao Jiao. Six students introduce themselves, mostly from humble backgrounds; the oldest is 28-year-old Dong Xiao Jie, and the youngest is Shen Jiao. They wonder about the missing Gao Shu Fang, whose name Shen Jiao recognizes. Han Qi Xiu, a soldier, quickly sets up his bed and offers to fix Shen Jiao's wobbly bed. When Gao Shu Fang arrives, she excitedly greets Han Qi Xiu, who coldly responds that he doesn't know her. This interaction amuses Shen Jiao and her classmates.
