Summary

In this chapter, the tension escalates as Orson and Hei confront the volcanic source stone worm, Pompeii, within a cave that has transformed into a fiery environment. Orson employs his ability, Curtain Call, to lower the temperature around Pompeii, giving Hei an opportunity to aim at its core. However, Hei's first shot fails as the anesthetic is evaporated by the lava's heat. Orson collapses due to exhaustion, prompting Hei to reassess their strategy. They regroup and decide to use a frost-enhanced device Orson possesses to lower the temperature long enough to make another attempt. With renewed determination, they rush closer to Pompeii, timing their actions alongside Orson's Curtain Call to expose the creature’s core. Ultimately, Hei successfully injects the anesthetic into Pompeii’s core during a moment of vulnerability, causing the creature to stop its violent resistance and revert to a dormant state, allowing them to conclude that their mission was a success. The chapter closes with Kelsey expressing relief over their success but then shifts to a separate scene where Cronin finds himself confronted by a monstrous figure and its controller, hinting at further conflicts ahead.
