Summary

The Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan is a safe, desolate area with a small nomadic Tajik population. The narrator, familiar with the terrain, travels through it without encountering trouble. They camp at a tranquil oasis where two women, Meara and Qian La Mi, engage in playful banter about bathing and snakes. Tensions arise as Da Yue Ti Ya, the chief, expresses distrust towards Xia Lei, despite his past heroics. She forbids Qian La Mi from pursuing a relationship with him, fearing American retaliation. Xia Lei realizes Da Yue Ti Ya's intentions may not align with his, leading to feelings of betrayal. After bathing, Da Yue Ti Ya uses thermal imaging to scan the area, hinting at hidden motives.
