Summary

On a cool night in Ningzhou, Yi Fan arrives at the haunted Zhang residence after being drawn away from the lively streets by desperate young ladies. He learns from Old Xu, the only remaining resident, that the Zhang family has perished due to haunting, leaving Yi Fan without a means to earn money for food. Old Xu offers Yi Fan a place to stay for the night, and despite feeling uneasy, Yi Fan accepts. As he settles into the side room, he reflects on Old Xu's kindness and the strange circumstances surrounding the residence, particularly how Old Xu heard his knock despite his poor hearing.
