Chapter 31: The Forgotten Laughter. [30]
Summary
In a decaying clinic, Orson, one of the infected, chooses to momentarily uplift the spirits of his fellow patients by sharing comedic stories and distributing flowers. His goal is to provide them with brief moments of joy amidst their grim existence, believing that these ordinary experiences can help counter despair. Naiyin, a curious young girl, is drawn in by Orson's performance and engages with him. Their conversation reveals her rebellious spirit against her overly protective guardian, Herak, who ultimately confronts Orson about his intentions to change the plight of the infected. Orson seeks Herak's support in his efforts to help the infected population, but Herak refuses, expressing his desire to only safeguard those immediately around him. Orson leaves the room feeling the weight of Herak's pessimism but is greeted by other infected individuals who, having shared a light moment with him, show signs of renewed hope and curiosity about life beyond their suffering. As he prepares to exit, Orson experiences a sudden dizziness, collapsing before being attended to by Dr. Ziegler, who diagnoses him with severe consciousness failure alongside advanced Oripathy symptoms. Herak, recognizing Orson’s potential, decides to send him back to his family. He contemplates his own past as a general and the lost dreams of changing the world, realizing his current life is now limited to caring for Naiyin and the other patients in the clinic. Meanwhile, Orson, trapped in a haze, struggles to regain consciousness and clarity amidst the confusion he faces.Full content
