Chapter 31: An Immediate Connection. [30]
Summary
Shen Xi, a young boy, stumbled upon a house for rent while seeking shelter from the rain. With the money from selling a painting left by an old Daoist, he managed to rent a courtyard home for his family. The kind-hearted owner, Lu Sun Shi (nicknamed Hui Niang), agreed to rent the courtyard to Shen Xi's family for a meager fifty wen per month. The courtyard, though not large, had a main room, two side rooms, a kitchen, and a toilet, as well as a spacious central courtyard with a well. Zhou, Shen Xi's mother, was overjoyed by their good fortune and vowed to set up a memorial tablet for the old Daoist. Unbeknownst to his parents, Shen Xi had made up the story about the old Daoist. The family moved into their new home, with Zhou and her daughter Lin Dai staying behind to tidy up while Shen Xi went to school.Full content
