Summary

Zhang Ye, a famous teacher, is taking a class at Peking University. The students are enthusiastic and eager to ask questions. A senior student, Zhou, asks a classic question: "If your wife and mother fell into the water, who would you save first?" Zhang Ye responds calmly, "I'll save my wife first, of course," and then adds, "And then I'll save my mother-in-law." The classroom erupts into a commotion. Zhang Ye then turns the tables on Zhou, asking him a question: "If your wife is pregnant and having a difficult labor, would you save the mother or the child?" Zhou responds that he would save the mother. Zhang Ye then asks another question: "What if your mother jumps into the water and asks you to save the child?" Zhou is stumped, and the classmates burst out laughing. Next, a senior student, Song Xue, known for her exceptional academic prowess, asks Zhang Ye a question about his literary qualifications. She accuses him of belittling another poet's work, "Everything," and questioning the collective wisdom of the professors who selected it for the textbook. Zhang Ye responds by saying that he is not trying to criticize or belittle anyone's work, but rather encourage discussion and exploration of different ideas.
