Summary

The chapter describes A Tu, a creature with a black tail, waking up in a tree hole where he and Chen are hiding. Chen tends to his wounds while A Tu helps him with bandages. Chen reflects on his foresight in stocking supplies in the tree hole, but worries about their dwindling food and how to safely exit. He recalls the dangers outside, particularly the Longchuan River and its monstrous inhabitants. Despite the tree hole's self-sufficient nature, Chen feels the need to leave before running out of food. While examining a puddle, he notices a Black Mud Lotus, a spirit grass he had previously hidden. As he reaches for it, he discovers it has rooted itself in the mud, and nearby, a mysterious black fire flickers.
