Chapter 28: The Love of the Xiongnu King. [392]

Summary

Liu Ling, driven by ambition rather than loyalty, subtly poisons Chieftain Junchen using a silver pot, causing his health to decline. Despite suspicions of poisoning, no evidence is found. Liu Ling's actions are motivated by her desire for change in the Xiongnu court. As the Chieftain's health worsens, Liu Ling navigates court politics, forming alliances and contemplating her future. The Chieftain, aware of his impending death, offers Liu Ling a chance for survival, suggesting she marry Yu Dan. Liu Ling, however, remains focused on her ambitions, even as the Chieftain acknowledges the limitations of his lineage. The chapter concludes with a feast, where Liu Ling's loyalty to the Xiongnu is tested, and the fate of Han messengers is sealed.
