Chapter 28: The Indifferent Driver [27]

Summary

Shen Jia Xing and his group arrive at San Li Bao Town, the only nearby market town, feeling disheartened by its desolate appearance. Xu Qiao expresses his superstitions about the number thirteen, while Shen Jiao defends her national pride, causing a brief reprimand from the red armbands. They stop for food, but the red armbands refuse the department head's offerings. The group is then met by a rugged man from the Northwest who drives their cart, pulled by three emaciated horses, one of which is bleeding. Shen Jiao, feeling compassion for the horses, jumps down to help push the cart, rallying others to join her. The group finds camaraderie in their effort, despite the disdain from the Northwest man.
