Summary

In this chapter, Scati expresses her desire to join a mission despite her lack of knowledge about Longmen. Meanwhile, Ch'en Hui-jie and Hoshiguma, both of the Guard Bureau, find themselves in an embarrassing situation as they must dress in silly costumes—Ch'en as a plush dragon and Hoshiguma as a carrot—to promote the Bureau's positive image in the slums. Ch'en is visibly uncomfortable and struggles with the absurdity of their task. As the two perform in the slums, their efforts backfire, generating more negativity towards the Guard Bureau rather than improving their image. Despite Hoshiguma's attempts to keep Ch'en focused, they both realize that the deep-seated resentment harbored by the slum residents is not easily changed. Ch'en reflects on the complex social issues at play while seeing the inhabitants of the slums, noting that understanding is difficult due to the stark differences in their environments. While attempting to better gauge their mission, Ch'en runs into Orson and Lin Yuxia, who seem to be collaborating on a project about the slums. However, when Ch'en’s identity is revealed after she accidentally strikes Orson while in character, the comedic chaos ensues as the residents gather, mistaking the plush costume for a clown. Amidst the unfolding events, Ch'en grapples with her feelings towards Orson and the awkwardness of the situation. Despite her frustrations with him, she momentarily sets aside her anger and continues the mission. However, trouble arises when a group of ruffians confronts Ch'en in the alley, seeking money. Without hesitation, she transforms back into a combat mode and swiftly handles the thugs, showcasing her combat skills and determination to protect the vulnerable, even while dressed in a silly costume.
