Chapter 26: The Violently Dead. [26]

Summary

In a quiet neighborhood, a sudden gunshot and a woman's scream disrupt the morning's peace. The narrator and his master, living on a fortified embankment, witness a murder and choose not to intervene. The master explains that getting involved would be dangerous and futile.
