Summary

Xia Tian returns to his territory with Wu Song and two soldiers, only to find the villagers gathered near the Lumber Workshop, distressed over two children, Niu Niu and Er Ya, who were taken by a creature described as a ghost. The old carpenter, Lu, expresses guilt for not watching over the children, who had stepped outside the protective barrier while playing. Da Niu arrives with one of the children, Er Ya, and reveals that Shen Lian chased after the creature, a "Xiao," which is known for eating human children. Xia Tian learns that the severed arm Da Niu brought back belongs to this creature. Realizing the danger, Xia Tian organizes a group to support Shen Lian and investigate the Xiao's lair, which they discover to be a clearing where the Xiao are building structures, indicating their intelligence and greater threat than mere beasts.
