Summary

Zhou Zhen realizes he is lost and feels something is wrong with his companions, Shu Tun and Zhong Song, after they seemingly lead him away from the village chief's house. He attempts to escape but is caught and overwhelmed by drowsiness. Awakening in a thatched cottage, he questions whether his earlier experiences were real or a dream. Starving, he ventures out at night to find food but repeatedly discovers that the vegetables he gathers turn to dirt upon returning. As dawn breaks, villagers begin their day, and a girl, Ming Ming, is tasked with delivering a chicken to the village chief's house but is distracted by hunger and consumes the chicken herself. The chapter ends with her contemplating her next steps as she hears gossip about the village chief's son.
