Chapter 237: Archery and Horse Racing Competition (14). [239]
Summary
In the Cuiwei Hall, State Minister Cai Jing and Right Minister Zhang Bang Chang urged Emperor Zhao Ji to withdraw the National Academy from an archery competition after a student, Li Yan Qing, unexpectedly won first place. Cai Jing, who had previously sought to control the academy's influence, was furious at Tong Guan's interference in persuading the emperor to include the academy. Despite Cai Jing's objections, Tong Guan argued that participation was a matter of national pride, especially after Li Yan Qing's victory against a renowned archer. The emperor decided to let the competition continue, much to Cai Jing's frustration. Later, Zhao Ji discussed military matters with Tong Guan, planning to eliminate the Liangshan bandits and seeking Tong Guan's recommendation for a commander. Tong Guan suggested Gao Qiu, a close ally of the emperor. After leaving the palace, Cai Jing plotted to expel Li Yan Qing from the academy but realized it would be politically dangerous. He suspected Tong Guan had placed his people in the academy and planned to appoint a new head to regain control. Cai Jing learned of Li Yan Qing causing trouble for the Xiang family business and saw this as an opportunity to further his own agenda.Full content
