Summary

Wu Zu recognized Hui Neng's exceptional potential but initially assigned him to work in a rice mill to avoid jealousy from his disciples. After eight months of hard labor, Wu Zu announced a search for a successor. Shen Xiu, a respected monk, composed a verse but failed to grasp true enlightenment. Hui Neng, upon hearing Shen Xiu's verse, created his own, revealing profound wisdom. Wu Zu, seeing Hui Neng's insight, secretly transmitted the teachings to him. Despite the danger of others seeking the ancestral robe, Hui Neng began his journey southward, ultimately spreading the teachings and establishing temples, including the Nanhua Temple.
