Summary

Zhang Chao, along with Cheng Chumo and his companions, left work early to visit Wuben Fang, a central district in Chang'an known for the Guozijian, the highest educational institution of the Tang Dynasty. The Guozijian housed six academies and had around 2,000 students, primarily from noble families. Zhang Chao, uninterested in the imperial examination, considered buying a house in Wuben Fang due to its proximity to influential officials and the prestigious academy. He learned of a large courtyard house for sale between notable families, which he found appealing for his family's needs. Eager to negotiate, he decided to meet the owner directly.
