Summary

Elder Guandou, confused by the report, learned from Commander Zhen Zong that the enemy was the imperial army, well-equipped and skilled, which had inflicted heavy casualties on Guandou's forces. After the enemy retreated without a counterattack, Guandou concluded they were weak and decided to pursue them for a decisive battle. He organized his light cavalry to chase the retreating imperial troops, who had successfully delayed Guandou's advance. However, Guandou's forces encountered a deep trench, which hindered their progress. Despite their efforts to fill the trench, they faced sabotage from the imperial army, causing frustration for Guandou. As time was of the essence, he sought alternative routes to Wang Ji and learned of a northern horse road. Guandou decided to split his forces: one contingent would take the northern route towards Wang Ji, while he would lead the other to distract the imperial army and continue efforts to fill the trench.
