Chapter 16: The Barbarians Are Coming. [17]
Summary
In the story, Uncle Zhang Da is curious about how Zhang Bai Ren caught a large fish in winter. Bai Ren humorously attributes it to luck. After gutting the fish, Bai Ren decides to share some with Song Laosheng at the military camp as a gesture of goodwill. Upon arrival, he is treated with respect, surprising the soldiers. Bai Ren's mother later questions him about the fish, leading to a clever explanation about a deputy general's kindness. As days pass, Bai Ren enjoys a comfortable life, training and feasting with soldiers, while the Water God of the Huai River observes his swordsmanship, suggesting he seek a master. The narrative shifts when Turkic cavalry appear, prompting Bai Ren to prepare for battle, eager to test his skills against them.Full content
