Chapter 16: Injecting Chicken Blood [15]

Summary

Shen Jia Xing encounters his neighbors, the Xu couple, who are preparing for their departure to the coal mine. The Xu family, once prosperous tailors, face financial struggles due to past debts and the chaos of war. As they converse, Shen Jiao, Shen Jia Xing's granddaughter, expresses a desire to buy a rooster, which raises suspicion about the Xu couple's intentions. They seem to be considering using the rooster for bloodletting, a traditional but now banned practice believed to boost health. The Xu couple feels embarrassed and cautious, explaining their situation to Shen Jia Xing, who offers to look after their family while Xu Gui Fu is away. Shen Jia Xing shares his own impending move to a border farm for reform, prompting the Xu couple to feel somewhat better about their own circumstances. After their conversation, Shen Jia Xing explains to Shen Jiao the concept of chicken blood therapy, emphasizing its dangers and the current scarcity of chickens and meat due to strict rationing. Shen Jiao learns about the harsh realities of their environment and the limitations they face, but remains hopeful due to her treasure bowl.
