Summary

General Cheng encounters two peculiar blue, stone-like entities that initially appear lifeless but are revealed to be living beings composed mostly of inorganic material. As they move slowly toward him, he realizes they possess self-awareness and exhibit simple emotional expressions through sounds. Despite their lack of language comprehension, General Cheng attempts to communicate with them. A thunderstorm causes the creatures to become unresponsive, leading him to understand that their consciousness is tied to the tiny organisms within them. After the storm, he constructs a floating pavilion for shelter, using his own bodily tissue to stabilize the structure. Over three days of rain, he modifies the creatures' surfaces, giving them appendages that confuse them, leading him to question their true nature.
