The Great Idle Person of the Zhenguan Era.

Chapter 15: Granting Official Titles and Land. [16]

Summary

Three imperial officials arrived at the Li Family's courtyard to deliver an edict from the Emperor. The officials were dressed in deep crimson and purple robes, with tall hats on their heads. They declared that Li Su, a villager, had brought comfort to the monarch by lifting the weight off the people's shoulders and had created a brilliant method to cure the plague by cultivating cowpox. The Emperor granted Li Su the title of Imperial Physician with the rank of Ninth Grade Medical Officer, rewarded him with 10,000 gold coins, and bestowed upon him 20 acres of fertile land. However, instead of showing gratitude, Li Su's father, Li Dao Zheng, was angry and humiliated because Li Su didn't understand the edict and didn't react accordingly. Li Su's father chased him around the courtyard, trying to punish him, causing chaos and confusion among the villagers. After the incident, the villagers began to show reverence to the Li family, and Li Su felt unhappy because his new official position had created a distance between him and the villagers. He wanted a leisurely and idle life, free from ambition, but feared that entering the imperial court would change everything.
