Summary

The chapter describes the weather and farming conditions in July, with heavy rains leading to a good sorghum crop. Two brothers, Da Su and Xiao Su, spend a night in the sorghum field, with Su Shi later writing poems about the sounds the sorghum makes. Xiao Su ends up with mosquito bites from the experience. Bao Zheng is pleased with the sorghum crop, as it will provide more profit than growing wheat. He considers asking Wang Jia to keep some of the sorghum seeds to help disaster victims. The chapter then shifts to a conversation between Wang Ning An and Bai Xiu E, where Bai Xiu E reveals that Bao Zheng had arranged a betrothal between Wang Ning An and herself, and she is upset that Wang Ning An is not doing more to help his father and uncle who have been locked up.
