Chapter 125: Gao Li Surrenders. [128]
Summary
In Pyongyang, fear and despair engulfed the city as citizens prepared for the Sui army's imminent attack. Yuan Tai Zuo reluctantly agreed to surrender under pressure from Prince Gao Yuan, despite his belief that Goguryeo could still resist. He arranged for Hu Si Zheng, a former Sui minister, to escape rather than be handed over to the Sui forces, fearing it would damage relations with the Bohai Society. Meanwhile, the Sui army celebrated a decisive victory, having defeated a significant number of Goguryeo troops. However, tensions arose when General Lai Hu Er opposed the emperor's decree to accept Goguryeo's surrender, believing it undermined their efforts. Despite his insistence on capturing Pyongyang, most generals sided with the emperor, leaving Lai Hu Er isolated. Ultimately, the Sui accepted Goguryeo's surrender, marking the end of the conflict, while internal strife within the Sui dynasty continued to brew.Full content
