Summary

Li Yan Qing returns to the inn during the late hours, where preparations for the upcoming imperial examination are underway. Examinees must arrange their own food and warm clothing for the cold nights. He visits friends Zhang Xian and Qin Liang; the latter has decided to abandon the exam. Zhang Xian expresses regret over his performance due to a candle going out during the test. Li Yan Qing advises him on the importance of avoiding cheating, as only a few will qualify for the provincial academy. The next day, examinees drop off their bundles for inspection before entering the exam hall. Li Yan Qing encounters Zheng Pang Zi, who arrives with excessive food supplies. As the exam begins, Li Yan Qing recognizes the familiar format of the questions and strategizes his approach, opting to draft his answers before writing on the official sheets. He finds his rhythm as he begins writing, fully engaged in the task.
