Summary

The Tang army's left wing, consisting of the elite Xiao Guo Jun cavalry, launched a surprise attack against the Jin Wolf Riders, previously elite forces of the Sui Dynasty. Despite their initial strength, the Jin Wolf Riders faltered under the onslaught, unable to maintain formation amidst chaos. Meanwhile, the coalition forces, despite numerical superiority, displayed disorganization, leading to ineffective combat.
