Summary

Li Yuan aimed to unify the southern territories over three to five years, starting with Yuzhang and Yichun Counties, where the Northern Sui had minimal forces. As the Tang army prepared for an eastern expedition, they planned to capture key locations for logistical support. Li Xiao Gong received the imperial decree to launch the campaign, dividing his forces to target Jiujiang, Yuzhang, Poyang, Yichun, and Luling Counties. However, unbeknownst to the Tang, the Northern Sui had secretly reinforced their troops and were preparing for a counterattack. Zhang Xuan, leading the Northern Sui forces, awaited the right moment to strike back as the Tang army advanced deeper into enemy territory, aiming to exploit their overreach.
