Summary

The Yingguan Pavilion, built over a century ago to welcome an imperial envoy, stands 10 li from Jizhou Prefecture. Jiang Cheng Yan and Feng Jing Yun, young members of the merchant class, find themselves at the back of a line of officials and gentry awaiting Zhen Bei Hou's arrival. They share thoughts about the Hou, with Jiang expressing a desire to inquire about his missing uncle, a soldier presumed dead. As the sun beats down, they sneak away to the pavilion's shade but are soon called back by an adult. When Zhen Bei Hou arrives, he is met with respect, though he humbly attributes his achievements to the emperor. The two boys, unable to see him clearly, are left curious about his appearance.
