Summary

In the year 547 of the Yong'an calendar, amidst a fierce snowstorm in Ku Hai, a young man named Wen Chao Sheng struggles to drag an injured woman on a cart through the harsh winter landscape. Despite his own suffering from the cold, he is determined to save her, taking her to a ruined temple for shelter. Wen reveals his status as a refugee, unable to gain citizenship in Qi Guo due to his poverty. He recalls his past struggles and the kindness of a dog that once saved him. As he prepares to leave the woman behind for the night, he hopes she will survive until morning, reflecting on his own fight for survival in a world that has been unkind to him.
