Summary

Yu Shen, a scholar from Shuntian, forms a bond with Yu Shi Chen, later known as Xun Jiu, during their time in the capital for examinations. They become sworn brothers and develop a close relationship, often visiting each other. After Xun Jiu’s death, Yu Shen grapples with the request to marry his sister, Su Qiu. Despite his initial plans for her marriage, she remains reluctant. Eventually, she marries Sun, a widower who becomes embroiled in gambling and poor choices. Han Quan, a schemer, attempts to manipulate situations for his benefit, leading to further complications. The narrative explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the consequences of societal pressures.
