Summary

In the 20th year of the Kaihuang era, a middle-aged man in Chang'an City anxiously paces in a lavish courtyard adorned with Jiangnan stones. A military general arrives, revealing that the Duke of Yue has ordered a purge in the Eastern Palace, leading to the self-immolation of the Xu Wei family. The man reflects on Xu Wei's misplaced loyalty and decides not to pursue Xu Gan, who has escaped with his newborn grandchild. Meanwhile, Xu Gan rides away, vowing to protect the infant, who smiles despite the turmoil. The old man laments their plight, recognizing the dangers they face from the aristocracy, and resolves to head north for safety.
