Summary

In this tale, Miao Yong Ding, a notorious drinker from Jiangxi, experiences a supernatural encounter after causing a disturbance at his uncle's gathering. He is taken to a mystical government office by a man in a black hat, where he meets his deceased maternal uncle. His uncle helps negotiate his situation with the authorities, warning him about his reckless behavior. After a series of bizarre events involving drinking and confrontations, Miao experiences a near-death experience, vomits profusely, and becomes temporarily cautious about drinking. However, a year later, he returns to his old habits and dies after a tavern dispute, seemingly paying the price for his persistent misconduct.
