Summary

The tale follows Yu Zhu, a book-obsessed scholar who values knowledge over worldly pursuits. His life changes when a mysterious beauty named Yan Ruyu emerges from an ancient scroll, becoming his companion. She tries to help him improve his life, discouraging excessive reading and encouraging social interactions. They eventually marry and have a child, but their happiness is disrupted when local authorities become suspicious of her origins. Yan Ruyu disappears, leading to Yu Zhu's persecution. Despite this, he eventually succeeds in exams and becomes a scholar, seeking revenge against the magistrate who burned his books.
